Causalim Religious Styles

The dynamics of religiousity in this country, especially Islam, is characterized by presence of the so-called persuasive materialistic da’wah. There are at least two of the most prominent forms: miracle of Alms is introduced by K.H Yusuf Mansur and Emotional Spiritual Quotient (ESQ) is promoted by Ary Ginanjar. People who identify the success of these two models try to make new variants in order to have similar success.

The miracle of alms which is taught by Ustadz Yusuf Mansur has been attracting many people to compete in charity. With theological persuasion, “Who gives the alms, the God will multiply fortune for him”, influence a lot of people to give alms as one way of “persuading” the God to be more affectionate and generous. Real examples of people who can rise up from poverty to fit into a wealthy is specifically a magnetism of Yusuf Mansur.

Meanwhile, Emotional Spiritual Quotient training that is developed by Ary Ginandjar had already reached success before. A great number of people pleasurably spent millions rupiah for such training that were often held in luxurious buildings. Cleverness of the trainers to provoke the audience have made an atmosphere of “condolence ” as filled up in the entire room. Almost every time, the trainers succeeded in making all participants to sob as a manifestation of regret.

Two models of these religious approaches try to give positive expectations such as reducing poverty and awakening people to repent. But, the reality on display in front of us remained unchanged or even more severe, though miracle of alms and ESQ have been scattering throughout many places in Indonesia. The poor still remains a lot, children still beg on the street intersection, and parents who could not send their children to schools due to lack of a cost are still lots. Corruption, political crimes or criminal acts are still rampant our nation.

It arouses a question, is effective miracle of Alms and ESQ method’s that seemed to bring the winds of heaven? I arguably assessed any negative effects that are not thought by the bearer of two models of this religious approaches. They succed to “attract” people to spend money for alms or for cost of training, but they are subconscious that was inculcated in is narcissism itself.

There is a “dogma” which conveys unconsciously, “If you’re good, then you will be rich”. Especially for miracle alms’s concept, people are taught to think shallow, “If you give alms, then God will repay more than what you give”. Critical questions on this statement is how God does not reward doubled immediately fulfilled? Necessarily, the basis of thinking is presented by Ustadz Yusuf Mansur disbanded immediately. While conditions in the field, the phenomenon of people who remain poor despite the charity are very much. More critically, we might ask, what percentage of the success of the many people who have been practicing the appeal of Yusuf Mansur?

Although using a different treatment, ESQ training aimed at forming those pious spiritually by releasing worldly passions, equally paradigm based on “good reward for a good man “. However, the relief lasts only a minute after training. Like “opium”, ESQ participants need more trainings to restore their soul when they began to run out of spiritual energy. Not infrequently, ESQ is made exibitionist, a trend that must be followed if you want to be regarded as “modern Muslims”.

In my opinion, the pattern of Mathematics Alms and ESQ has built on the idea of cause and effect. If we do A then the result B will necessarily be obtained. If I gave charity, I would receive a reply that would be more bigger than that I had donated. When I became a better , the other people would be my helpers to realize my success. The style of religion such as this has negated the power of God to delay giving a reply to his people. Expectation that God will soon repay off what we do, it could be an indication of weakness of faith. In that sense, there is impatience to wait for rewards in the hereinafter. This is a form of unhealthy transactional interaction between us and God.

Unconsciously, da’wah patterns such as the so-called Alms Mathematics and ESQ have resulted in negative effects. I named it as atheistic religiousity, where people attracted by religious dogmas, but on the other hand, coercion of God unpunished. We demand the Lord to give a reply on the good we have done. An action that seems to be true, but it is hidden defiance against God’s authority in regulating human destiny.
